An estimated 5,240 Gwinnett County homes will file a water damage insurance claim this year, according to a research report released by Water Pro Inc.
The Gwinnett County Water Damage Report draws on NOAA's Storm Events Database, FEMA National Flood Insurance Program claims data, U.S. Census Bureau housing data, and Insurance Information Institute claims statistics to examine local water damage risk.
At a national average claim of $15,400 per incident, the report estimates $80.7 million in annual water damage economic impact across Gwinnett County.
The report's most counterintuitive finding is that storms are not the primary problem. Water Pro Inc. reports that more than 90 percent of its professional water damage jobs are caused by internal failures rather than weather.
The release also notes a flood coverage gap. According to FEMA data cited in the report, one-third of National Flood Insurance Program claims between 2013 and 2023 came from properties outside designated high-risk flood zones.
"Less than 10 percent of our jobs are storm related. Most homes drain the water away pretty well during the average storm."
