Gwinnett County homeowners have weathered a severe storm event roughly once every 23 days for the past ten years, according to a new analysis of NOAA Storm Events Database records published by HD Pro Roofing.
The report covers 2015 through 2024 and documents 158 separate severe weather incidents, including 19 significant hail events and 139 damaging thunderstorm wind events, that together caused $9.5 million in verified property damage.
Storm activity accelerated sharply in recent years. Gwinnett County recorded 38 severe storm events in 2023 alone, followed by 24 documented events in 2024. Those two years account for 38% of all storm activity in the decade.
The report's most striking event occurred on July 21, 2018, when a hailstorm tracking from Dacula to Lawrenceville dropped 2.5-inch hail and caused $7.5 million in documented damage.
Housing age compounds the risk. The 2024 U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey shows that 186,022 Gwinnett County homes, or 53% of all housing units, were built before 2000.
"Most homeowners have no idea how many storms their roof has endured."
