Cumming, Georgia, June 2026
An estimated 5,270 mothers in Gwinnett and Forsyth County stop breastfeeding before the six-month mark each year, according to a community health research release from One Family Pediatrics.
The data cited in the release draws from the CDC's National Immunization Survey-Child, the CDC Breastfeeding Report Card, and the Georgia Department of Public Health. It describes strong breastfeeding starts followed by a marked drop-off after hospital discharge.
Gwinnett County's breastfeeding initiation rate is cited at 86.3%, above both the U.S. national average of 84.1% and Georgia's state average of 83.1%. Across Gwinnett and Forsyth County, the release estimates that 14,503 mothers begin breastfeeding each year.
The release identifies weeks two through twelve as a critical support window, after hospital lactation support has ended and when outpatient options may be limited for families experiencing latch, supply, pain, or feeding concerns.
"Most of the problems that cause mothers to stop breastfeeding in the first weeks are identifiable and correctable."
